Summer Derbyshire

MA Architecture Student with a specific interest in storytelling and mixed media integration into architectural design.

ADS 12: Bespoke Interwoven Communication:

A new architectural narrative woven from the process of stitching a patchwork quilt and circular knitting structures. This project celebrates the notion of knitting biodiversity and fabric harmoniously creating a sanctuary for student parents to study with their children.

AcrossRCA Caring Society: Co-Creating Care: A Wheelchair for Dogs

A DIY accessible wheelchair for dogs, focussing on affordability, accessibility and adaptability. Our final response was a working prototype, instructions and an open-source website, that allowed our target audience to join the community with the opportunity to collaborate and adapt ideas. We provided video footage of our production process and a set of diagrammatic instructions so everyone may be able to understand and recreate it, regardless of ability or language.

Media Studies: The Sound Localisation of Deforestation

This research and the outcome of this project introduce a new working concept: non-contextual sound – an exploration of the demonstrative role of sound, as both an unmanipulated listening contrivance, as well as taking register of and exposing the practices and procedures behind our foodscapes. The Foley sound effect technique synchronises with the visual, on-screen action to bring the soundscape to life. By reversing the function of Foley, the foodscape can be brought to life, by synchronising the moving image visual to the audio. This is a critical engagement with the use of audio in broadcast media, questioning the use of Foley as a deceiving perception of reality, the same way our foodscape is not projecting the reality of its enduring journey that brings us our everyday food.
