Erica Watum

I am an emerging curator and multidisciplinary artist, from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and South Africa. Within the curatorial, I am interested in uncovering radical methodologies and approaches, which subvert existing structures in place. I seek to uplift often marginalised histories, practices and individuals. Community-driven, transparent, and ethical curatorial approaches which exist as platforms for transcultural exchange - are what interest me the most.

My multidisciplinary work must always be introspective and autoethnographic. I cannot create art unless my past experiences and current state are being explicitly examined for the viewer, and myself. I create conceptual art rooted in investigations into my womanhood and cultural heritage. In doing so, I uncover a deeply sociopolitical and sociocultural foundation, which links all pieces together in an evolving body of work questioning evolving contemporary cultures. Race, gender identity, sexuality, sustainability, and geopolitics are themes which take precedence in my visual works. By exploring multiple media and artmaking forms, I create process-oriented works; whereby the researching, prototyping, and reworking of ideas is prioritised just as much as the final presentation of an artwork. I am focused on developing new techniques for my art practice, and an appreciation for materials sourced locally and ethically.
