Elis Mutlu

Elis stands before balcony railings, facing the camera. Dark cityscape in the background.

My practice is centred around material culture, and its centrality to our engagement with life as human beings. Designed objects are integral to this notion, and our subsequent relationship with them constitutes my interest as a historian.

I endeavour to consult a variety of research fields, enacting a multidisciplinary approach to consider the role of design in constructing and mediating cultural identities. It is my hope to contribute to ongoing conversations and efforts by design historians that consider material agency, and the part played by archives and collections in interpreting, negotiating, and representing certain narratives.

My discipline is rooted largely in early 20th century design culture, in relation to ethnography and transnational exchanges - early Hollywood filmic and sartorial representations of the female identity form a large part of my research interest, and present much to be examined through a design historical lens.
