Trigger warning

The group was successful in securing a collaboration with PTSD UK to provide an exhibition on PTSD triggers.
Caring Society

The inspiration for this exhibition derived from an existing archive of childhood secrets. This led to exploring the themes of archives as a process and a way of bringing visibility to various issues. With a common interest in the topic of memory and trauma, the group decided to focus on PTSD and its triggers and symptoms, such as flashbacks.

Being often misrepresented on various media outlets as well as a silent and invisible condition, the group considered using the archival process to record, showcase and raise awareness of PTSD triggers in an attempt to promote accurate representation, visibility and empathy amongst the general public.

The group was successful in securing a collaboration with PTSD UK, which assisted with gathering information about PTSD triggers and was enthusiastic about the potential of such an exhibition as a method for raising public awareness, promoting empathy, and supporting individuals.

The importance of trigger warnings goes beyond informing the audience about the content of certain films, theatre pieces, music, etc. Such content, whilst for the general public, may generate shock or an uncomfortable feeling and will most likely not result in further issues after the exposure.

For an individual who is suffering from an invisible condition such as PTSD, a trigger warning can play a crucial part in allowing the individual to avoid reliving trauma. In addition to this, it is important to note that for someone with PTSD, the reliving of the trauma is not an isolated incident where the person will be fine after the exposure; for them, this will lead to experiencing symptoms that severely affect their daily lives and functioning.
