Sonic Earth is a zine containing a DIY instructional sound workshop, inviting participants to explore the concept of ‘deep listening’ and the process of field recording, using their phones.
Deep listening is a listening practice that explores the difference between the involuntary nature of hearing and the conscious act of listening. It was developed by American composer and accordionist Pauline Oliveros. Pauline was a central figure in the development of post-war experimental and electronic music.
Deep listening includes listening to the sounds of daily life, nature, one’s own thoughts, imagination, and dreams. It cultivates a meditative and heightened awareness of the sonic environment, both external and internal, and promotes experimentation, improvisation, collaboration, playfulness, and other creative skills.
The first deep listening scores and activities were published in 1971.
Sonic Earth is brought to you by The Greenhouse Collective, our concept for a participatory arts initiative that facilitates DIY workshops that connect people with the natural world, through a series of instructional guides. Our mission is to provide tools for artistic exploration and empower individuals to embark on shaping their own creative journeys, vital to personal and collective growth.
