Mixtape is a collaborative exploration of the sense of loss inscribed in the journeys across time on the London Underground.

On 10th January 1863, the world’s first underground railway, the Metropolitan Railway, began its journey between Paddington and Farringdon. Today, four routes in the London Underground cover the same journey: Elizabeth, Bakerloo, Metropolitan, Circle, and Hammersmith & City. Within the tunnels of the Underground, one experiences a suspension of the sense of time and space. It is an individual sensation experienced collectively, simultaneously discordant and harmonious, connecting us in this inscrutable sense of loss with others who have experienced the same—consciously or unconsciously. In experiencing this, we become part of a palimpsest that narrates the story of this city since the beginning of the Underground network, sharing the space with co-passengers who may have ridden the first-ever train in the system.

We aim to articulate the connections between loss and care. We see our work as a metaphor for the experienced loss and fragility of our senses and possessions that somehow bind us all in even more fleeting connections in the urban landscape.
