Mayday Project

Performance that utilizes the flag as a tool to raise awareness and to express our preoccupation for the urgent situation of climate change.
Climate CrisisAwarenessClimate Change

Our project is a performance that utilizes the flag as a poignant tool to raise awareness and to express our preoccupation with the actual political situation that seems unwilling to deal with the urgent crisis of climate change.

In our performance, we employ different symbols as tools of transformation that help us create a flag with profound meaning.

In the beginning, the white flag communicates surrender, and a plea for help, accepting in a way our impotence as individuals against the corporations and government decisions.

The ice serves as a direct symbol that explores through the melting, the concept of rising waters, reaching a tipping point, the time and urgency exists

The ice has shaped each individual block as the skulls of humans and a dodo head. the dodo, links us to the natural world and human-caused extinction, as we are not only destroying the human habitat but entire ecosystems. The human skulls create the awareness of our own destruction.

As a metaphor for oil, we use ink, poured on top of the ice, that slowly dyes the white flag. Gradually the ice melts, and covers the entire flag, ultimately resulting in a black, oil-stained symbol floating in the air—a powerful representation of the environmental impact

In the culmination of our performance, the transformed flag serves as a symbol of protest and the help needed. We raise it in the air, and we cross the bridge as a path, a road, a destination. We, as all living things on this planet, are at the crossing.

Hopefully, we reach the other side in a harmonious existence.
