Awareness Unlocked: Your Guide to Taming Information Overload.
Being DigitalPhysical HealthWellbeing

Our project, "I-diet," represents a fictional medical company addressing the issue of information overload among young adults aged 18 to 24. Through various interactive, speculative, and humorous tools, we do not aim to resolve information overload entirely but to mitigate its effects through awareness, education, and self-reflection.

The audience can engage with our services via our website, where they can either take a quiz for a personalised diagnosis or explore and purchase our tools.

Our journey began with self-reflection. Conversations revealed that many of us felt overwhelmed by the constant barrage of both essential and unnecessary information throughout the day. We began monitoring our phone usage, leading to discussions on how this inundation was impacting our daily lives, culminating in the recognition of "Information Overload." Studies define it as when the volume or intensity of information exceeds an individual's processing capacity. The advent of the information age and easy access to data exacerbates this issue.

In today's digitised world, the ease of publishing means anyone can contribute to the overwhelming amount of data shared daily, exacerbating information overload. Studies indicate its adverse effects on cognitive abilities, productivity, attention, and mental health, including depression, anxiety, and psychosis.

Given that our exploration was motivated by self-reflection, we targeted students aged 18 to 24. Through desk research and behaviour testing, we conducted surveys to understand our audience better. From 72 responses, we found physical strain and impaired concentration to be prevalent issues. We found that coping mechanisms include distraction and disabling notifications.

We aimed to collaborate "with" rather than merely "for" our audience, emphasising self-reflection. Monitoring our own habits and information consumption provided invaluable insights into our audience's behaviour.

To extend our project's impact and encourage future development, we're considering organising an immersive or interactive exhibition. This exhibition would feature physical representations of our online products, enabling attendees to engage with them firsthand.

MIZARU 見ざる (See No evil, Three wise Monkeys). This design aims to address IO-ADHD ( info-overload based ADHD ). It controls users' intake of information by restricting their field of view, helping them isolate unnecessary visual stimuli and improve focus. According to tests, 90% of users experienced significant improvements in attention and efficiency. Interestingly, there has been an unexpected increase in traffic accident rates for reasons yet to be determined.

Gonna Bump Your Hand Off. This design aims to address "Hand Rigidity Syndrome", a condition where patients experience prolonged exposure to high-information-content devices such as smartphones, leading to various common physical and mental disorders. This product continuously inflates airbags while the user is using the smartphone, eventually bumping the patient's hand away, thus forcibly separating the patient's hand from the smartphone and reducing the intake of information.

I want to stick it in your eyes. This is a design aimed at addressing "Information Indigestion", which is a brain barrier designed to combat information overload. It is affordable, versatile, and incredibly useful. Users can chew on it to stick it onto their laptops, preventing them from opening it, or use it as earplugs to block out noise. In extreme cases, users can even use it to cover their eyes, shielding them from all visual stimuli.

Boxes with thumb cones.
A Thumb Cone One Cone a day keeps your screen away. The digital escapism caused by mindless scrolling detaches people from reality and causes isolation and more invisible mental issues. Thumb Cone is designed to ease this behaviour. It aims to help users quit their addiction to screen scrolling by keeping the finger and screen at a safe distance. Each package contains 5 cones. This way, users can decide how many cones they want to apply to their fingers based on the severity of their symptoms.
Boxes with 3 screen guard
Chillout GuardStep away from the screen and chill out. This product is a screen guard that prevents people from excessive and prolonged use of electronic devices by indicating when it's time to stop using them through colour changes. This screen guard is made of a material that reacts to temperature changes, causing its colour to change accordingly. As the duration of electronic device usage increases, causing the device's temperature to rise, the colour of the screen guard gradually changes to blue.
